Co-Regulation n.

The term is distinct from self-regulation, which draws only on internal resources; co-regulation instead borrows partly on another person's regulatory capacity.

The definition

Co-regulation is the process by which another person's presence, voice or touch helps steady an individual's physiological and emotional arousal, easing a stress response that would otherwise have to be managed through self-regulation alone. It operates through calming vocal, facial and postural cues and underlies attachment bonds across the lifespan, though its effect on wellbeing depends on relationship quality.

The mechanism
