Do multivitamins actually improve memory?

Advocates argue that a large NIH-funded trial in thousands of older adults proved a cheap, over-the-counter multivitamin measurably slows memory decline, so anyone worried about brain fog or fading recall should be taking one daily. The idea has since spread well beyond the older adults the trial actually studied.

The mechanism is plausible and the headline trial is real. Yeung et al.'s three-year COSMOS-Web trial found that a daily multivitamin-mineral supplement significantly improved immediate recall in adults over 60, an effect equivalent to roughly three years of slowed age-related memory decline against placebo 1. A companion analysis by Baker et al. found broader cognitive scores improved too 2, and an earlier meta-analysis had already linked multivitamins to better immediate recall specifically 5.

Harvard and Wake Forest press offices publicised the COSMOS-Mind results through 2022 and 2023, and mainstream health coverage followed. Wellness creators on TikTok and Instagram then took a finding generated in well-nourished adults over 60 and repackaged it as a 'brain health stack' for a much younger audience, an extrapolation the trials themselves never tested.
