The claim took hold in 2012 when Adam and Galinsky coined the term in a deceptively simple experiment: participants wearing a coat labelled as a doctor's coat outperformed those wearing the same coat labelled as a painter's coat on a selective attention task 1. It offered a flattering proposition: meaningful self-improvement through a wardrobe choice, anchored by a scientific name and a memorable experimental image. Harvard Business Review coverage amplified it into mainstream career advice, repackaging 'dress for success' from folk wisdom into a testable cognitive claim.

The theoretical scaffolding is solid. Embodied cognition theory, established decades before the 2012 paper, holds that physical artefacts and states systematically shape thought. Clothing, worn against the body all day and saturated with cultural meaning, is exactly the kind of constant physical cue this framework predicts would influence cognition. Slepian et al. extended the research across five experiments, finding that formal attire raised abstract thinking by elevating felt power 2.
