Do self-rewards build habits, or undermine your motivation?

The advice to reward yourself after completing a habit is everywhere, and the operant science behind it is real. But the same research shows a sharp qualification: tangible expected rewards reliably reduce engagement for activities you already enjoy. The type of reward and what you are rewarding determines whether you build a habit or erode it.

Reward yourself after every completed habit and your brain encodes the behaviour faster. Dopamine reinforces whatever action preceded pleasure, so tying an immediate treat to a finished habit should short-circuit the weeks of grinding required before a new routine becomes automatic. This is what Atomic Habits built an entire framework around, and why the advice has spread so far.

The premise rests on a century of operant conditioning research. B.F. Skinner showed that positive reinforcement reliably strengthens the behaviour it follows, and the dopamine system does exactly what the claim predicts: a pleasant consequence following an action increases the probability of repeating it. For effortful or neutral behaviours, this mechanism is well-documented 4.

James Clear's Atomic Habits sold over 15 million copies by making 'make it satisfying' the fourth and final law of behaviour change. The formula was simple, actionable, and mapped neatly onto social media: documenting a completed habit and earning likes became its own reward loop. TikTok's #RewardYourself content amplified this further, turning self-reward into a shareable aesthetic rather than a clinical protocol. The result is an advice category that is simultaneously grounded in real science and stripped of the conditions that make that science work 2.
