The popular claim that more options always means worse decisions rests on a famous jam experiment and a 2004 bestseller. The evidence is real but conditional: four specific circumstances determine when overload strikes, and for most of the world, having too few options is the bigger problem.
More options overwhelm the brain and reduce both the motivation to choose and the satisfaction with whatever is chosen. The more alternatives you face, the more cognitive effort evaluation demands, and at some point the rational response is to avoid the decision entirely or settle for something and feel regret about what you left behind.

Maximisers, people who hold out for the best possible option, are the most vulnerable. Under complex assortments they show lower happiness, higher depression scores, and elevated regret compared with satisficers who stop at good enough. The effect is consistent across multiple independent samples.
Before evaluating any option set, write down the criteria that would make a choice good enough. When the set is large and complex, reduce it deliberately before deciding. Choosing the first option that meets your threshold (satisficing) produces greater long-term satisfaction than continuing to search for the optimal one.
