Stress, Cortisol, and Trust
The relationship between trust and stress physiology is bidirectional. The evidence base for specific trust-building interventions remains more correlational than experimental96. Cross-cultural generalisability is limited: most research is Western-origin54. The oxytocin replication failures70 are a reminder that popular narratives can outpace evidence. An organisation attempting trust repair after a third major scandal faces fundamentally different odds than one recovering from a first-time failure: repair capacity is finite, not infinite.
- What do critics and sceptics say about trust science?
- Legitimate critiques target oxytocin replication failures, over-reliance on Western samples, and the gap between correlational evidence and causal claims. Hardin (2002) challenged whether trust is trainable at all, arguing it is simply rational self-interest: "encapsulated interest" in another's behaviour40. Luhmann (1979) framed trust as a necessary complexity-reduction mechanism rather than a chosen skill62. The oxytocin replication crisis (Nave et al. 2015; registered replications 2020) undermined the neurochemical narrative7073. Political trust has its own contested evidence base126. The love languages critique (Impett et al. 2024) exposes how popular frameworks survive without empirical support45. These critiques are valid and inform the calibration (not the abandonment) of evidence-based trust architecture.
