It points to a real, well-documented burden that face-to-face conversation simply does not impose.

Stanford's Jeremy Bailenson gave the feeling a scientific name in 2021, proposing that video calls impose nonverbal overload: sustained mutual gaze at close range, an all-day mirror in the form of self-view, and the extra effort of producing and reading nonverbal cues without the ambient signals of a shared room 1. Fauville and colleagues turned that theory into a measurable instrument, the Zoom Exhaustion and Fatigue Scale, and confirmed the exhaustion rises with meeting frequency, duration and lack of breaks 2.

The claim spread because it arrived at exactly the moment millions of people were suddenly living through back-to-back video meetings for the first time, and Bailenson's mechanism gave that shared exhaustion a name and a plausible cause. It travelled further once it carried scientific-sounding vocabulary, letting a subjective feeling become something people could cite rather than just complain about.
