Advocates argue that confining all eating to a fixed daily window, usually 16:8, aligns digestion with the body's circadian clock and unlocks fat loss and better blood sugar control that calorie counting alone cannot match. No macros, no tracking; just a clock.

The circadian rationale is real. Manoogian et al. reviewed the circadian-biology evidence and found that confining food intake to a consistent window improves glucose handling, lipid metabolism and cardiovascular risk factors in animal models, independent of how much was eaten 1. In an early human pilot, Wilkinson et al. found that a 10-hour window improved weight, blood pressure and blood lipids in people with metabolic syndrome over 12 weeks, though the trial had no control group to rule out simple calorie reduction as the real driver 2.

That mechanistic legitimacy, traced to Satchin Panda's mouse research at the Salk Institute, gave the idea scientific cover as it moved into the bodybuilding world's 16:8 protocol and then into fitness influencer content and diet apps, where it was pitched as a way to lose fat without changing what or how much you eat.
