Do binaural beats really sharpen focus, or just sound like they do?

Two meta-analyses place binaural beats at a medium effect size for cognition, but the mechanism they assume (brainwave entrainment) is contradicted by most EEG data. The largest randomised trial found impairment, not enhancement. The honest position: modest ambient effects are plausible; reliable focus enhancement is not yet proven.

02What's being claimed

Listen to headphone audio tuned so that each ear receives a slightly different tone, and your brain generates a third, phantom frequency at the difference. Sustained exposure to that internal frequency will shift your cortical brainwaves into the target band, delivering measurable improvements in focus, memory, and cognitive control.

The premise has genuine neuroscience behind it. Oster's 1973 report in Scientific American established that binaural beats are a real brain-generated percept: when two tones differ by fewer than 30 Hz, the auditory cortex creates a frequency-following response at the difference 6. From there, the hypothesis that sustained exposure could entrain cortical EEG rhythms into a desired band (alpha for calm focus, theta for creativity, gamma for cognitive acceleration) became the commercial narrative that the Monroe Institute and its successors built around the technology.

What drove the trend from niche to mainstream was cost and accessibility. Binaural beat tracks are free on YouTube and Spotify; the mechanism sounds scientifically credible; and two meta-analyses published headline effect sizes (Hedges' g of 0.40 to 0.45) that circulated widely 12. Self-optimisation culture, already primed to seek effortless cognitive tools, found a compelling candidate; millions of focus playlists followed.

Klichowski et al. ran two randomised controlled trials (n=1,000 total) comparing binaural beats at 5 Hz and 15 Hz against silence using Raven's Matrices as the outcome measure4. This is the largest well-powered trial in the field and its direction runs contrary to most smaller positive studies.
