Does quiet eye training actually improve performance under pressure?

Quiet eye training, the deliberate gaze-fixation technique used by elite athletes, has earned its place in sport psychology. The evidence is strongest in targeting and aiming sports, and large in competitive settings. But claims that it helps all athletes in all sports are running ahead of what the studies actually show.

Before any skilled movement, elite athletes lock their gaze on the target for longer and later than novices. Train less experienced performers to replicate this quiet eye pattern and, the theory goes, they perform more accurately and with greater composure under competitive pressure.

Quiet eye training (QET) emerged from Joan Vickers' gaze-control research in the early 1990s. Vickers showed that elite athletes hold a sustained, stable fixation on a target in the final moments before movement in a way that novices do not. Vickers called this the quiet eye period. The observation prompted an obvious question: could deliberate training to extend this fixation period transfer the expert advantage to non-experts? 1

The answer from controlled trials is largely yes, within a defined domain. Vine and Wilson's lab at Exeter University translated Vickers' observations into a structured protocol. The approach spread quickly through sport psychology and coaching practice after a 2011 study demonstrated that elite golfers who received QE training cut their putting average in real competition 2. High-performance coaching media then carried the protocol to mainstream athletes, presenting it as a teachable mental skill applicable across all competitive sport.

05So what do you actually do

The evidence supports a narrow but competitive-grade version of quiet eye training.

Targeting sport athletes with access to video or eye-tracking feedback are best placed to implement it.

01Choose targeting tasks first: golf putting, basketball free throws, archery, or penalty kicks are the settings where QE training has genuine competitive evidence.
02Extend the pre-movement fixation consciously: hold your gaze on the target for noticeably longer than feels natural before each attempt, until the extension becomes automatic.
03Use video or eye-tracking review in practice sessions to confirm you are maintaining fixation, not just believing you are.
04Train it under simulated pressure: quiet eye skills acquired only in calm conditions tend to break down in competition, so build the habit against a stressor.
05Resist over-generalising: if you compete in dynamic, multi-player team sports, treat QE training as an untested add-on rather than an evidenced core intervention.
